(30 Jun 2015) Brazilian soldiers pulled out of the Mare favela complex in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday, handing over responsibility for the area to state police and making way for the next stage of the city's pacification programme. The army was called in to help combat growing violence in the favela, located near the international airport, in 2014, and to secure the complex ahead of the World Cup that summer and next year's Olympic Games. The soldiers having been pulling out gradually since April but Tuesday marked the official handover of control to the local state military police. The Mare complex is made up of 15 favelas and it is estimated to have a population of at least 140-thousand people.
