'Turkiye – Israel Relations: Water Under Bridge?' | Digital Debates

The relationship between Turkiye and Israel has ebbed and flowed since its formalization in 1949, going through multiple ups and downs along the way. Since 2008, more often than not, diplomatic relations have been kept to a minimum level. However, after years of tensions, several Middle Eastern countries, including Turkiye, have embarked on a journey of reconciliation and fence mending. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently hosted Israeli President Isaac Herzog in a landmark visit. President Erdogan described this step as a turning point that aimed to revitalize political dialogue and increase cooperation between the two countries in various fields. While there remain some significant areas of disagreement, such as the Palestinian issue, the potential for enhanced relations is real with both parties capitalising on future joint opportunities. This session will examine the possibility of rapprochement between Ankara and Tel Aviv and explore the wide range of mutually beneficial opportunities as well as the obstacles facing these relations.
