Stitch welding and lapping the steel baseplate for mounting the HGR25 rails, ballscrew and motor. Base is 8"x1/2" steel plate with stitch welded 1-1/2" x 1" cold rolled flat bar. The rail mounting face was then progressively lapped with abrasive and a granite surface plate. A reference edge for 1 one the linear guideways was added, also lapped and shimmed to be straight using a Starrett straight edge. This weldment is the foundation of the machine, it will be cast into an epoxy-granite mix or a non-shrink precision grout with aggregate, with some other steel components that will become mounting points for the upper axes. 00:00 First axis movement 00:08 Stitch welding steel parts + fixturing 00:20 Stitch welding results 00:28 Testing the carriage fitment 00:34 Lapping with surface plate 00:38 Checking straightness with Starrett No. 380 00:45 Rail reference edge 00:52 Checking reference edge straightness 01:07 Marking and drilling 5mm holes for M6x1.0 tap 01:33 First check of the rail straightness - to be improved later 01:50 Weldment with ball screw and motor 01:58 Carriage assembled
