Built during the Ptolemaic period (around 54 BC), it retains extraordinary colour in its hypostyle hall, an intact roof with sweeping Nile views, and a series of underground crypts that most visitors never find. The famous Dendera Zodiac — a circular carved map of the heavens — was originally located on the ceiling of one of the roof chapels. (The original is now in the Louvre; a replica remains in place.) But the zodiac is just one of dozens of remarkable ceilings, columns, and sanctuaries throughout this vast complex.
