USX Expedition Aims to Summit Mount Everest

For the past five years, more U.S. soldiers have died from suicide than enemy attacks in both Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s a jarring statistic that veteran U.S. Expeditions and Explorations nonprofit, USX, seeks to bring more attention to by climbing to the top of Mount Everest this spring. Their mission is to summit the first active duty male and female Army soldier, and first combat wounded military veteran (a single-leg amputee) to the 29,029-foot Mount Everest peak by Memorial Day weekend in order to expose the problems surrounding soldier post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), that often lead to soldier suicide. Every day more than 22 veterans and one active duty soldier commit suicide making suicide rates for veterans double and sometimes triple of the rate of civilian suicides.
