Gulmarg means a meadow of flowers. Gulmarg is one of the most important and popular tourist destinations of Kashmir. The two-stage ropeway Gulmarg Gondola is another important attraction of Gulmarg which goes up Apharwat Top about 14000 feet above sea level. Mid-way stage of Gondola is also very beautiful and is known as Kongdoori. The ropeway ferries about 600 people per hour. The origin of Gulmarg as the golfing centre of India goes back to the late 19th century when a 6-hole course was made in 1890-91 by Colonel Neville Chamberlain. Situated at an altitude of 2,650 m, it is the highest green golf course in the world. In 1948, the Indian Army established a ski school in Gulmarg that later became the High-Altitude Warfare School. Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar and last 12 km is a typical hill road. Passing through dense forests of Pine and Devdar.
