Protestors were joined by some of the children of Palestinian prisoners. Earlier, in the West Bank town of Nablus on Tuesday, thousands of demonstrators held a candlelit march also demanding the release of Palestinian prisoners. According to the Israeli army, a Palestinian group who kidnapped an Israeli taxi driver last Friday had aimed to win the release of jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti and 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Palestinian leaders and militant groups have warned that for the two-week-old ceasefire declared by militants on 29 June to hold, Israel must release the 7,000 prisoners it holds. The issue does not appear in the so-called "road map" peace plan, and Israeli officials say they will not release militants involved in attacks which killed Israelis.
