Eight of the 18 protesters - taken into custody near the city's landmark Grand Place square - were charged with being in possession of Molotov cocktails, police said. The others were held without charge. Over the past two days, demonstrations had drawn a total of over 90-thousand protesters, but only around 600 turned up for Saturday's rally which took place near E-U headquarters, but far away from the summit site. Among issues they protested against were world trade and the military actions in Afghanistan. Of the 40 German activists detained on Friday after scuffles with police, four have been charged with attacking police officers and destroying public property. Brussels Mayor Freddy Thielemans, who oversaw summit security operations, said the 40 were taken into custody because they were seen firing wooden and steel projectiles with slingshots at riot police. Two police were injured and several vehicles were damaged, he said. Police deployed 3-thousand offices over the two-day summit. A large area of Brussels around the Laeken Palace, where E-U leaders were meeting, was blocked off to traffic, and helicopters, water cannons, police and horse patrols were deployed.
