On St. Patrick's Day 1920 Frankie Donovan resurfaces in Chicago. After escaping Ireland in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising he has become disillusioned with the cause of Irish freedom and is determined to take care only of number 1. But events in Ireland will follow him across the Atlantic... The Irish have travelled to and contributed to America since the very beginning; 8 or so of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence were Irish or Irish-American, as were up to 40% of the Continental Army. Most of these early arrivals were of Presbyterian, Ulster-Scots backgrounds but from the 1840's onwards, fleeing the Great Hunger and economic deprivation, the United States would be flooded with poor, uneducated Irish Roman Catholics. Viewed with suspicion by the society they arrived in, they found many hiring notices stipulated that "No Irish Need Apply". In this playthrough Frankie Donovan will turn that phrase on its head, hiring from the ranks of Irish and Irish-Americans to build an Empire of Saints and Sinners. For Irish-American Heritage Month 2021 I'll look at the games references to Irish history and hire historical Irish-American gangsters.
