John the Baptist begins preaching in the wilderness, calling people to repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy of a voice crying in the wilderness. He warns the crowds to produce fruit in keeping with repentance and speaks of one more powerful coming after him who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John rebukes Herod for his sins and is eventually imprisoned. Jesus is baptized by John, and the Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove as a voice from heaven says, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” The chapter ends with a genealogy tracing Jesus' lineage all the way back to Adam, the son of God.
