Some 8,000 Russian troops have been eliminated, killed or severely injured, during their attacks along the frontline over the past week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said. According to a statement by Zelenskyy, Russian forces have been attempting to increase the intensity of their assaults. However, these efforts have yielded little beyond mounting casualties. He noted that the recent uptick in operations has not led to meaningful gains, but instead to significant personnel losses. Zelenskyy also said that Russian leadership has begun to recognize discrepancies between frontline realities and the reports previously delivered to senior officials. As a consequence, some brigade-level commanders have reportedly been dismissed for providing inaccurate information. Despite these internal changes, he emphasized that such measures are unlikely to improve Russia’s overall situation. On the battlefield, Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian positions in the eastern Donetsk region have remained largely stable over the past week. In northeastern Kharkiv area and near border communities in the Sumy region, Russian attempts to push forward have been detected but are being repelled by Ukrainian forces. Meanwhile, Ukrainian assault and airborne units continue active operations in certain directions, alongside ongoing precision strikes deeper behind enemy lines, with additional operations already planned. Regarding broader developments, Russian forces have recently increased pressure in several sectors, particularly in the Zaporizhzhia region. Nonetheless, Zelenskyy asserted that Russia’s anticipated spring offensive has effectively failed. He explained that Russian troops are no longer able to advance using heavy equipment and are instead resorting to smaller, more fragmented infiltration tactics. It should be noted that Russia is attempting to regain momentum through renewed offensives, but progress is slow and costly, while Ukraine focuses on defense, targeted counterattacks, and deep strikes aimed at weakening Russian logistics and capabilities. The General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces reported 134 clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces during March 22, with Russia launching 67 airstrikes, dropping 285 guided bombs.
