Thanks to Fraims for the idea of the end of this TAS (channel: / @fraims ). Previous TASes of this star (such as the previous WR by lemon; no video but her channel is here / @lemon9bug ) climbed to the top of the mountain and dove/fell onto the star from above. Fraims brought up the idea of using the fly guy to twirl directly to the star. It would require some manipulation, as the fly guy has to climb quite a bit. Also, Mario would have to use the log to get to the steep slope instead of the fly guy, which is a bit slower. However, I did some tests and determined that it was at least possible to beat the traditional approach by a few seconds by hacking the fly guy to the right spot on the right frame. So it was still plausible that the fly guy manipulation would be quick enough for the strategy to be worth it. I initially messed with some ideas that had the fly guy follow Mario up from behind while he climbs the steep slope, but these were all too slow. I eventually found the approach in the video, though, which I describe below. The key step is step 5: I'm able to make the fly guy climb for a while, stop spiraling, and then climb again very soon after, giving me good control over his angle before a final raise. 1. Make fly guy lunge north (toward the waterfall) and climb a bit 2. Make fly guy spit fire once to give the log enough time to turn 3. Make fly guy lunge toward Mario (southward) right as Mario DRs from the log with rng such that fly guy turns clockwise 4. Climb the slope a bit to enter the high zone, making fly guy climb and spiral 5. Go back down to the medium zone so fly guy stops spiraling and his y speed returns to 0 6. Go back into the high zone again with rng such that fly guy goes straight this time. Step 5 should be timed so that the fly guy is angled toward the spot where Mario needs to hit him. 7. Go up the slope as fast as possible to hit the fly guy as low as possible while still making it to the star That results in the strategy you see here, which is actually about 2-2.5s faster than the traditional approach. I was pretty happy that this is faster, not only because it gives more variety between stars, but also because it gives an opportunity to manipulate twirl yaw. Mario's angle when landing from a twirl depends on his twirl yaw, which is conserved between levels, and his angle when landing on the steep slope is very important for Mystery of the Monkey Cage (which still needs to be TASed) and Scale the Mountain.
