Apart from heart-related issues, chest pain may arise from the lungs, blood vessels, gastrointestinal system, muscles, joints, or anxiety. One such condition is Costochondritis, a musculoskeletal pain that commonly affects the area between the 2nd and 5th ribs, often appearing unilaterally. Symptoms of Costochondritis include stabbing, sharp, and aching pain in the front of the chest, which may radiate to the surrounding areas. This pain may worsen with body movement. How is Costochondritis diagnosed? A thorough history and physical examination are crucial. Movements like cross-arm motions can exacerbate the pain. Additional diagnostic tools such as bone scans, ultrasound scans, chest X-rays, MRI, CT scans, or rheumatological scans can also aid in the diagnosis. What are the treatment options for Costochondritis? Various approaches can be taken, including topical gels, anti-inflammatory drugs, numbing patches, or physiotherapy. Injections guided by ultrasound can be employed for both treatment and pain diagnosis. Procedures like PRP injections, intercostal nerve blocks, dry needling, and acupuncture, as well as local anesthetics with steroid injections, are among the treatment options available.
