Five people have been charged in a home invasion that happened Thursday around 9:40 p.m. in South Bend. Police were called in response to a burglary in progress in the 1000 block of North Michigan St. near the intersection of North Shore. 47-year-old Walter Neely, 21-year-old Khawana Lamar, 19-year-old Lee Griffin, 18-year-old Nate Coley, and 17-year-old Gemari Cotton have each been charged with 2 counts of robbery and 3 counts of burglary. On the scene, officers found two victims inside the home with injuries that appeared to be life threatening, so St. Joseph County Metro Homicide also responded. Three other victims were also found with injuriesin the home, and all were taken to an area hospital. Five suspects attempted to flee the scene and police say some were carrying items from the home. Police were able to apprehend all five suspects. Area neighbors say they still believe it's a safe neighborhood. All hope this is an isolated incident and have faith in the SBPD. Ryan Madison, a nearby neighbor says, "I think it's still a pretty safe neighborhood, doesn't seem to be a pattern yet. Keep your doors locked at night. I don't know what else you can do."
