BREAKING NEWS: South Africa Omicron COVID-19 variant - Could it be worse than Delta? A new coronavirus variant has been discovered that is rapidly spreading in South Africa. Currently dubbed B 1 1 5 2 9, the new variant has so far been detected in South Africa, Botswana and Hong Kong. According to genomic scientists, this new variant has a high number of mutations, with more than thirty in the key spike protein. It is spreading very fast, and according to health authorities in South African, the health system is likely to come under pressure in the next few days and weeks. It is too early to tell the variant's impact on vaccine efficacy, but other regions are already getting worried. The U.K and the Netherlands have banned flights from six African countries. Singapore and Japan are also rushing in stricter quarantine measures, and the European Union is proposing to ban flights from the region across the whole bloc. South African officials will brief the World Health Organization soon, and the variant continues to be under close monitoring. The variant still does not have a memorable name like Delta or Beta, but scientists are concerned that this may be the worst variant yet. --- HealthManagement is a dedicated healthcare portal promoting management, leadership, cross-collaboration and winning practices in healthcare.
