The primary symptom almost all sickle cell patients suffer from is intense acute and eventually chronic pain. However, this is far from the only system. Sickle cell can affect any body system, and can lead to anything from stroke, to retinopathy, to kidney disease. As sickle cell patients see all these specialists and suffer through pain, the emotional impact of the disease is often left unacknowledged.
