The curious case of Imran Khan's FIR | 20 minutes with Nadia Naqi | Dawn News English

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party resumed his protest march to Islamabad after recovering from an assassination attempt, as his supporters staged nationwide protests that blocked major roads. Khan was shot in the leg last Thursday as he waved to crowds from a container mounted on a truck from where he was leading a protest march on the capital to press for early elections and calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Khan accused three people of devising the plan to assassinate him, naming Sharif, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and intelligence official Major-General Faisal Nasser. He did not provide evidence for his claim. The media wing of Pakistan's military called the allegations "baseless and irresponsible." Sanaullah also rejected the allegations and said the coalition government had demanded an independent investigation. Sharif also condemned the shooting and ordered an investigation. This led to a deadlock between Punjab’s ruling coalition partners — PTI and PML-Q — over the ex-premier’s reported insistence to book a senior army officer, the prime minister and interior minister in the case. After the Supreme Court warned that it would initiate suo motu proceedings if the Punjab police failed to register an FIR regarding the assassination attempt on former prime minister Imran Khan, the provincial police finally registered the case under terrorism charges, with detained suspect Naveed being nominated as the prime accused. The FIR lodged on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Amir Shahzad at 11:10pm on Monday under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and Section 302, 324, and 440 of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered after a delay of three days. The names put forth by the PTI chief, however, are missing from the FIR. In this episode of 20 minutes with Nadia Naqi, we asked legal expert Abdul Moiz Jaferii if the law allows victim to nominate whomever they want without evidence.
