By Tim Martin Columbia-Greene Media GLENS FALLS — Glens Falls has been a problem for Section II football teams this year — a big problem. The Indians have destroyed everything in their path, beating their nine opponents by an average score of 43-11 in winning the Class B North Division title and earning the No. 5 ranking in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association poll. Coach Pat Lilac’s squad will look to win its first Section II championship since 2012 when it meets Hudson (9-0) at Shenendehowa High School on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will mark the second time this year that a Section II championship game will feature Glens Falls playing Hudson. Back in February, the Indians and Bluehawks met for the Class B basketball championship, with Hudson pulling out an 80-76 victory. The star of that Glens Falls team, Joe Girard III, happens to be the starting quarterback on the football team and has proven to be equally as effective on the gridiron. Now a sophomore, Girard (6-foot-0, 150 pounds) took over the quarterbacking reins from Josh Griffen this year and has had a breakout campaign, completing 54 of 85 passes for 905 yards with 13 touchdowns an just one interception. He’s also rushed for 174 yards on 41 carries with 6 touchdowns. When the Indians choose to air it out, Girard has a host of capable receivers to choose from. Senior Andrew Murphy (5-10, 150) is Glens Falls’ top receiver statistically, catching 22 passes for 409 yards with 4 touchdowns. He’s also carried the ball 10 times for 222 yards with 4 TDs. Tony Green has 13 catches for 245 yards and 4 scores and Dylan Balcom has 6 catches, three of which have gone for touchdowns. Friday’s winner advances to regional play and will take on the winner of the Peru (Section 7) vs. Potsdam (Section 10) game at a Section II site on Nov. 11 or 12.
