‘Soul Man’ was composed by the legendary Isaac Hayes in collaboration with David Porter and became a huge commercial success for Sam & Dave, who released it as a single in 1967 on Stax Records. They won a Grammy Award for Best Rhythm and Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental. The song’s inspiration was found in the turmoil of the Civil Rights Movement. Isaac Hayes saw a television news item on the aftermath of the 12th Street riot in Detroit, Michigan. He noted that the buildings that had not been destroyed during the riot were marked with the word ‘soul’ – most of these building were owned and operated by African-Americans. The lyrics, borrowing from the biblical story of Passover, talk about rising above one’s conditions.
