Various of protesters walking along street, some chanting "Alahu Akbar" STORYLINE Egyptian police and military forces firing tear gas moved against hundreds of protesters in Cairo on Friday night, trying to push them away from the Israeli embassy. A stand-off between protesters and police followed, with both sides firing firebombs at the each other. Crowds first gathered throughout the afternoon as well as into the night, advancing on the embassy and tearing down large sections of a security wall outside the 21-storey building. Egyptian police made no attempt to intervene for several hours. According to an Egyptian security official, a group of about 30 protesters also broke into the embassy building and began dumping hundreds of Hebrew documents from a balcony. Earlier, protestors managed to climb up and pull down the Israeli flag for the second time in less than a month . In response, Israel''s ambassador to Egypt, Yitzhak Levanon, his family and other embassy staff were reported to have left for Cairo''s airport on Friday to await a military plane to evacuate them. Israeli officials refused to comment on the ambassador''s reported departure. Since the fall of Egypt''s former leader Hosni Mubarak, anti-Israeli sentiment has surfaced among Egyptians whose calls to end an historic 1979 peace treaty with Israel have grown louder. Anger swelled last month after Israeli forces responding to a cross-border militant attack mistakenly killed five Egyptian police officers. The protests also come at a time of change, seven months after the popular uprising that drove Mubarak out of office. Egyptians are pressing for urgent reforms, including more transparent trials of former regime figures accused of corruption, and for a clear timetable for parliamentary elections.
