The optic nerve sends signals of what we see back to our brain. When glaucoma progresses and damage occurs, you slowly lose your peripheral (side) vision. Glaucoma is often called the silent thief of vision because you may be asymptomatic until the disease has progressed. Glaucoma can cause irreversible damage that cannot be changed or fixed. The goal of treating glaucoma is to control the pressure of the eye to prevent any further damage from occurring. Glaucoma is a very treatable condition that can be addressed through specific eye drops or a laser procedure. It is very important to have your eyes checked annually to ensure that your eyes are healthy and have no signs of glaucoma.
