JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA Montage of opens and talent bumps, as well as a 7.25 am news update and 11pm news close, from Nexstar's dual CBS/ABC affiliate serving the Wheeling, WV — Steubenville, OH market. On March 9th at 5pm (show already posted), WTRF debuted a new set which had been in the works for some time, as Nexstar has upgraded all of their West Virginia stations (except WOWK) with new sets, graphics, and updated production equipment, as well as new cameras with proper teleprompters (not a screen above the camera like previously). Accompanying the launch was a new graphics package, MOD-1, used by multiple stations in the Nexstar Nation. The station opted for this package due to all of its shows also being simulcast on its ABC subchannel. A new logo was also received that looks fairly similar, but not an exact replica, of the logo used by sister station WSPA in Spartanburg, SC. Speaking of the ABC subchannel (7.3), that channel simulcasts the 6am, 12pm, 6pm, and 11pm newscasts from the 7.1 channel and for whatever reason, has separate opens, so those are included here. That also explains the 1-2 second gap in between the opens and the start of the actual newscast, because the opens on both stations are being played out from master control simultaneously to "line up" each station's clocks correctly and ensure the news airs on both stations at the same times. I think it would be much, much easier to just use a generic open on both stations, but if this setup works better for them, then more power to them. The music remains the same: "Aerial" from Stephen Arnold Music, but they've opted for the updates in the morning (still using the OG cuts at night, and not as much variety as sister station WBOY utilizes). Paul Turner is still the station's voiceover artist and a holdover from the West Virginia Media Holdings days (all of their stations used him for voiceovers and all but WVNS still do). WTRF rates second behind longtime leader WTOV. Before the 1980s, it used to be the reverse, but a combination of multiple factors led to WTOV becoming the leader. They also have the better product of the two stations (it feels like a much larger market product and they're running largely off of the Cox fumes) in this market, but WTRF has really stepped it up in the past year or two and this upgrade was sorely needed. Their product under the WVMH and early Nexstar years was not very good. Anchors include Steven Ruffing, meteorologist Aaron Myler, Steve Moore, Kathryn Ghion, Colin Roose, and Rebecca Little.
