Remove The "Fluff" From Your Feelings Reflections For Greater Impact

Often when we’re reflecting feelings, we will say phrases like “that felt”, “it seems like,” “it looks like,” or “your face is telling me.” Those aren’t adherent reflections. Reflecting feelings matters because of its long-term impact: emotional vocabulary, emotional intelligence, self-control, the ability to identify feelings, the ability to communicate needs, etc. When we say “it seems like,” or “it looks like,” we shift the focus away from the child’s internal experience. “You are sad” lands differently and speaks to the heart of what the child is feeling.
