Incident Information: At 10:20am, a duck hunter called 911 to report his two friends had fallen into Mud Creek after their kayak capsized from striking a large piece of ice. Both hunters from the kayak were thrown into the icy waters and were unable to exit the creek. Police and fire were dispatched immediately with patrol arriving in three minutes. The deputies and troopers located the stranded parties in the creek within three minutes. The Troopers obtained a department issued rescue rope from their patrol car and a crow bar was tied to the end of the rope. Troopers and deputies used the rope with the weight on the end to throw the rescue line to the first stranded boater. The boater was pulled ashore and police, along with Rapids Fire personnel pulled the boater up the banks to safety. The rescue crew repeated this procedure to rescue the second boater as well. The rescues were completed at 10:45am, 35 minutes after the kayak capsized. Rapids Fire immediately began first aid on both victims with assistance from Wendelville Fire Company. Wendelville’s swift water rescue team also responded to the incident and assisted. Rapids Fire transported both parties to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital for treatment of exposure. Both are expected to recover. The investigation by the Sheriff’s Marine Division is ongoing. Neither party involved was wearing a life vest nor did their kayak have any rescue lines. The kayak was recovered by Wendelville Fire Co.
