The Lincoln County War was an Old West conflict between rival factions that began in 1878 in Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory, the forerunner of the state of New Mexico, and continued until 1881. The feud became famous for starring William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid. Other notable participants included Sheriff William J. Brady, rancher John Chisum, lawman and astute businessman Alexander McSween, as well as James Dolan and Lawrence Murphy. In November 1876, John Tunstall, a wealthy Englishman, arrived in Lincoln County, New Mexico, with ambitious plans to establish a prosperous cattle ranch, shop, and bank. He teamed up with young lawman Alexander McSween and rancher John Chisum to make it happen. At the time, however, Lincoln County was dominated both economically and politically by Lawrence Murphy and James Dolan, owners of LG Murphy and Co., later James J. Dolan and Co., the only store in the county, which took on the nickname of The House. The factions involved in the conflict are divided not only by economic interests but also by ethnicity and religious beliefs. Murphy's faction consisted mainly of Irish Catholics, while Tunstall and his allies were predominantly Protestant British. There is important information that LG Murphy & Co lent the Territorial Attorney General a substantial amount of money and in return, the Territorial Attorney General pledged to support the company. Back in 1874, Emil Fritz was a partner at LG Murphy, and after his death, the executors of the estate hired Alexander McSween to collect his insurance policy.
