I first argue that the traditional justifications of Porphyry and Rhetorius for the exaltation assignments are misguided. I argue instead, that more progress can be made by examining what function the exaltations play within traditional astrology. I propose a model inspired by Manilius's account of tutelary deities and Heidegger's theory of dwelling, and then apply this model to each of the planets following the Chaldean order.
