TRT World - World in Focus: Syrian deal unsteady but holding

Cessation deal began on February 27 It’s been a week since the US and Russia brokered “cessation of hostilities” began in Syria. And 7 days have passed with each side claiming that the “cessation” has been violated. Deal violated within hours Hours after the deal came into effect on February the 27th, reports started to circulate that the cessation had been violated by Russian air strikes and attacks by regime forces. The Syrian Network for Human Rights also states it recorded at least 180 breaches within the first five days. However, the Syrian regime and Russia have rejected all the accusations. They claim they avoided making any “mistake s” that would risk the ceasefire. US, Russia to set mechanism for ceasefire violations The United States and Russia agreed to set up a mechanism to keep down Syria cessation violations. That was the main point of concern. When the cessation was first declared by the US and Russia, no one knew if anyone had a clear strategy to enforce it. Mistura: Info sharing is a must As John Kerry announced a mechanism to avoid violations, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan De Mistura had another thing to worry about. Mistura, said to enforce the cessation of hostilities Americans and Russians must cooperate to specify terrorist locations. Kerry says partition of Syria could be part of ‘plan B’ What happens next is the question...and everyone wants to find an answer including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan… But it looks like the US has some options. Secretary of State, John Kerry, has said he will move on a plan B that could be a partition of Syria if the cessation fails. Russia says federal model possible for Syria The “Plan B” that Kerry is talking about once again differs between Washington and Moscow. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov says a federal model is possible for Syria in the future. It looks like “if”s will define the future for Syria. If the cessation of hostilities holds, if the US, Russia, Turkey and Iran can work things out then a new round of peace talks could begin. And in the meantime, the United Nations must manage aid convoys so they can safely enter conflict areas to help suffering civilians.
