FAMILY HOLINESS As we continue our celebration of Christmas, we turn our attention to the Holy Family. We can entrust all our families to the intercession of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. As each one of us seeks to follow Jesus, to trust God’s Spirit dwelling within us, and to be holy, so too we strive for our families and for our family of faith to be holy. It is hard work. I believe dedicating prayer, time, and effort to reconciling with our families can help us in the ministry of reconciliation in the Church and in the world. Risking enough to touch the wounds, to look honestly at resentments, and to acknowledge our role in all of it can be painful. Some of us may never arrive at a “happily ever after,” but the work of healing relationships strengthens our capacity to love and to risk real connection with our fellow disciples as we build God’s Kingdom. Joseph had to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt because pride and fear made the world into which Jesus was born a dangerous place. We can more easily surrender our pride and fear when we earnestly seek forgiveness and healing within our own holy families. God bless you. Saint Josephine Bakhita, you are with us. Fr.
