Fukushima residents: Japan's radioactive water dumping plan leaves us with no hope for revival

Japan will start releasing more than 1 million metric tonnes of treated radioactive water from the wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant on August 24, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced on Tuesday. He said his government had confirmed it was ready to take measures to ensure safety and to provide support to businesses impacted by reputational damage stemming from the water release. The decision has drawn strong criticism from local people. Only less than 10 kilometers away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the Futaba Town in Fukushima was severely contaminated by the nuclear accident. It started to allow residents to return in August of last year. Hit by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake and an ensuing tsunami on March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant suffered core meltdowns that released radiation, resulting in a level-7 nuclear accident, the highest on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale. The plant has been generating a massive amount of water tainted with radioactive substances from cooling down the nuclear fuel in the reactor buildings, which are now being stored in about 1,000 storage tanks. It has been treated to remove most radioactive elements except for tritium, an isotope of hydrogen that must be diluted because it is difficult to filter.
