(4 Dec 2018) ON GOTHAM RED CARPET, NOMINEES WEIGH ON THEIR FAVORITE FILMS OF THE YEAR As award seasons kicked off with the Gotham Film Awards, nominees in New York shared their thoughts on their favorite film of the year. Glenn Close said she needed a little more time to check out some more films before coming up with her decision. "I have to say I haven't seen all of them because I'm in a show right now. I'm doing a play, so I haven't seen a lot of them. But I know what film I can't wait to see - a lot of them. So, I will be able to answer that hopefully, in a couple of weeks." Close was nominated for "The Wife." "At Eternity's Gate" star Willem Dafoe also wished to defer his answer. "You know, the year is kind of just beginning. I've been working. I've got a stack of screeners, and the holiday's coming when I have a little break, I'm gonna, you know, watch a lot of movies." However, actress Rachel Weisz has her favorite - Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favourite" - and for good reason. "I like it because I'm in it," Weisz smiled "Moonlight" director Barry Jenkins won't make his choices until he's seen the runners and riders on a big screen. "I still haven't seen enough. I haven't seen 'First Man.' I haven't seen 'Suspiria.' I'm trying to watch everything in a theater, not on screeners. So, once I get caught up, maybe I will have a favorite." "Private Life" nominee Kathryn Hahn was "profoundly" affected by horror "Hereditary." "I saw things and felt things I can never un-see or un-feel," Hahn said. While "Big Mouths" co-creator Nick Kroll was partial to Bo Burnam's "Eighth Grade." "I just think it's a beautifully realized film. Beau is super funny and talented. It's awkward. It's real. It's hilarious. It's scary. It's everything you want a m movie to be, and I couldn't recommend it enough," Kroll said. The animated "Big Mouths" was nominated Breakthrough series. For actor Alessandro Nivola, it was Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma." "It's just beautifully framed. And the story, the way it's told through the camera is brilliant. The acting is just astonishing. You've never seen any of these people before. It feels like real life. And then on top of that it's not like a kind of opaque, weird story that's inaccessible. It's very emotional and very moving and yeah." Finally, director Paul Greengrass has a few favorites. "I think there's a lot of really good movies this year. Where do you start? 'A Star is Born.' 'First Man.' 'The Favourite.' Uh, 'A Quiet Place,' I thought was really good. 'Widows,' by my compatriot Steve McQueen. There's a lot of good movies this year."
