Demonstrations began after Istanbul police dispersed a crowd on the fourth day of a peaceful protest against a government plan to redevelop Istanbul's Taksim square. The protesters demanded that the square's Gezi Park be protected from plans that government officials have said include the construction of a shopping mall. The protest that started in Istanbul spread during the day to the nation's capital where protesters were still throwing missiles at police and dodging the spray of water cannon long after darkness fell. The protesters in Ankara chanted anti-government slogans in solidarity with those in Istanbul. Clashes continued despite an Istanbul court ordering the temporary suspension of the project to uproot the trees. Many people suffered injuries in the melees, including a prominent journalist and member of parliament. In Ankara, some 500 people crammed into a small park close to many embassy buildings, calling on the government to resign. Many also aired grievances against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Islamic-rooted government, which has been seen as displaying increasingly authoritarian and uncompromising tendencies in its third successive term in office.
