Rumsfeld Monday. A moment of silence was observed at 9:37 a.m. EST (13337 GMT), the exact time the plane struck, killing 184 people. General Peter Pace told the assembled troops and victims families though the number of US service members killed in the wars Washington has prosecuted in Afghanistan and Iraq following the attacks mounts, the military was recommitting itself to avenge the events of that day. Rumsfeld emotionally recalled the day of the attacks, where he was in the building at the time. He said that although the costs have been dear, that America is winning by not allowing others to change their ways of life. Rumsfeld's arm was in a sling - he is recovering from shoulder surgery. Cheney delivered a message from the President, and said that "We have no intention of ignoring or appeasing history's latest gang of fanatics trying to murder their way to power." Following the ceremony, bagpipes played Amazing Grace and troops stood at attention on the roof of the Pentagon above a flag marking the rebuilt spot where the third hijacked aircraft, American flight 77 crashed into its target.
