He's portrayed as a charming, handsome, hot, evil being who loves tricking humans and keeps feeding on them during the entire beginning of the first season. He was turned into a vampire by Katherine Pierce, a female vampire whom he fell in love when he was human in 1864 in Mystic Falls, Virginia. He came back to release Katherine from a tomb full of vampires, only to discover she escaped and never looked for him. He uses Elena's friend Caroline to feed on, and is almost killed when Stefan poisons her blood. He kills Stefan's football coach, his oldest friend, Lexi, and their 21st century descendant, Zach. Despite his outwardly evil manner, Elena always reminds him that there is something kind in him, and she brings out his best qualities. Isobel reveals that Damon is in love with Elena, and he makes no move to confirm or deny this. It is shown several times throughout the season Damon is capable of caring for others (Rescuing Elena from a car wreck, helping Stefan escape from being tortured, and teaming up with Stefan, Bonnie, and Elena to protect Mystic Falls.) In season two, it was revealed that Katherine never did love him, it was always Stefan. Upset, a drunken Damon goes to Elena in her room. He tells Elena that he strongly believes that she loves him, then kisses her. Elena insists that she loves Stefan, and that it will always be Stefan, almost exactly what Katherine had previously told him, leaving Damon heartbroken. In an attempt to hurt Elena he snaps Jeremy's neck, resulting in Elena declaring her hatred for him. Despite this claim, she later saves his life from Bonnie, who takes her anger out on Damon after discovering that his blood enabled Caroline to become a vampire. _______________________________________­_______ Rose Marie [Lauren Cohan] Rose is a 500-year old vampire who is running from the original vampires after her friend, Trevor, saved Katerina Petrova, after she stole the Moonstone. She and Trevor kidnap Elena, who are expecting Elijah. Elijah kills Trevor, but leaves Rose alive. After Elijah is staked and presumbly killed by Damon, she vanishes, then returns to the Salvatore house to warn Stefan about Klaus coming after Elena. Rose and Damon go to Richmond, Virginia to find Slater, another vampire that can help them find Klaus. At the end of "Katerina", she and Damon sleep together. In "The Sacrifice" Elena convinces her to come with her to talk to Slater behind Stefan and Damon's backs. She is reluctant but soon agrees when Elena tells her she could get her a lapis lazuli ring. They find Slater dead and find his human girlfriend Alice, who only dated him in hopes of becoming a vampire. She is very upset and is shocked when Elena asks her to open Slater's computer files and refuses. Elena says she'll convince Rose to give her blood. Rose whispers to Elena that it won't happen. Elena said she had lied to Alice which makes it unknown whether or not she was telling the truth to Rose about the ring. When Rose finds that Elena is planning to sacrifice herself to Klaus she calls Damon showing that she does care about Elena. When Elijah confronts the three, Rose runs away in fear, much to the anger of Damon. Stating that she had meant to runaway even if they died after Elena tries to defend her by saying she was scared. In "By the light of the Moon" Rose appears at the Salvatore's home as Damon returns. She apologizes to Damon for taking Elena to Slater's home and almost getting her killed, and says she has no where else to go. Damon says there is no place for her there, but before he can leave a loud noise is heard. Damon and Rose go to the living room to find a Werewolf named Jules whom Damon spoke to at Mystic Grill. The Werewolf attacks Damon, but Rose steps in to stop it. Jules then bites Rose, and Damon stabs Jules with a sword. The sword is not enough to kill the werewolf, but she does run away. Afterward Damon looks at Rose's wound to see if she is okay. Rose is relieved to see that the legend about a werewolf bite killing a vampire was just a myth, but is shocked when she discovers that the wound is not healing the way it should, and it is still present on her shoulder. The affects of the werewolf bite are currently unknown.
