ALBANY -- According to the New York State Community Action Coalition, more than 75,000 people in the Capital Region are living below the poverty line. Nearly 24,000 are under the age of 18. Now some of those kids, that otherwise may have gone without a present under the tree this Christmas, will get a special surprise. "We work with teachers, councilors, case workers, from a lot of the different local schools, and identified the families that were in need, and we've just created this opportunity for them to come and shop," says Gareth Gilpen, pastor at Redeemer Church in Albany. The Redeemer Church in Albany set up a shop for those in need to provide Christmas presents for their kids. Everything in the room was donated, from toys to winter clothing. The the church helps wrap each gift, that the parent gets to pick out for their children. The event was set up so that between six and seven families can shop around ever half hour, just as they would in a store. We're told it's going to serve nearly 500 children this Christmas. "Christmas morning, these kids are going to have presents to open and Mom and Dad got to participate in the process, they got to pick it out," says Gilpen.
