This is a prime example of why you should EDC a keychain ferro rod. (See my EDC Fire Makers Playlist LINK below.) I used the Flint and Steel technique today with a saw and piece of Chert. I made sure to keep my charred Denim and Chert dry, but didn't really think about how wet my saw was getting! As I tried to ignite the char cloth, moisture from the saw transferred to the char cloth and to the Chert making the ignition very difficult. After about 15 strikes, a spark finally caught. Then, I presumed that 3 pieces of char cloth down in the dampish leaves tinder bundle would be enough heat. LOL! Before they completely burned away, I had to grab about another 6 pieces which finally got the tinder bundle to go to flames. I really really needed this practice today! These difficulties could have been avoided with more inclement weather practice and/or with the use of a ferro rod. Those ever dampening leaves needed an open flame to make them ignite. I could have ferro rod ignited Pine resin, fatwood, something dry from my wallet, the top of my sock, a sleeve or pocket off my shirt, etc. Don't get me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed my practice in the rain today. Come check it out, follow the LINKs below, and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You!
