Silver Flowers – The Music of Tom Petty & Bob Seger, performed by Dan McCoy & the Standing 8s On Sept. 22, 2018 Dan McCoy & the Standing 8s played Bob Seger’s Live Bullet album to a standing room only crowd at Beal’s Pickles & Pints in Willoughby. The response was so overwhelming a second show was added on Dec. 29 of the same year. That show was also standing room only. At each of these shows the band filled out another 2 hours by playing songs from Seger’s vast catalog as well as their own material. Noting the local market for “tribute” bands was lacking a Bob Seger representation McCoy thought he & the 8s would be the perfect group to fill in that hole. In addition to their love of Seger’s music the group also shares a deep rooted affection for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. This was evident when an impromptu jam of about 12 Petty songs arose one night at practice. One member would start a song & the others would quickly fall in. Upon realizing the number of songs from both the Seger & Petty this band could play it made sense to combine the two. While the songs may not be a note for note re-creation of each song it’s damn close & presents a unique evening of hits as well as deeper cuts. While this is a new endeavor for the guys the response thus far has been nothing but positive with folks consistently asking when the next show will be.
