In August 2008, a war broke out between Georgian government forces and the breakaway province of South Ossetia. Russia immediately joined in on the side of the latter. Russian Air Force was heavily involved flying close air support, interdiction and other types of sorties. It also experienced heavy losses in this short conflict.
