Previous: Meteor Moat Next: Rising Tides of Lava Mario's not done crossing the moat yet, it seems. Next up is what must now be a staple of the New Super Mario Bros. series: Rafts that sail across a large pool of what is otherwise instant-kill material with an occupancy limit as marked on the raft itself: There is a limit on the number of total things that lands on the raft besides Mario, whether it be enemies, power-ups, or even Coins. If that limit is reached, the raft stops until there are fewer things than the limit again. In this stage, that limit is 5. It can become quite troublesome when Micro Goombas show up, because they come in swarms and will follow Mario left and right wherever he goes, so they can't be lured off the raft. Unlike variants in jungle stages in previous New Super Mario Bros. games, however, the raft stopping does not just slow down your progress; it can be downright lethal. This is because there is a slowly advancing cloud of toxic smoke or volcanic ash (not sure which) that will kill Mario if he touches it. Luckily, it advances slightly slower than the raft. Just slightly though. As you can see, I accidentally bounced on a Micro Goomba while spinning, causing Mario to glide through the air even slower, allowing the cloud to catch up. Because it takes so long to defeat enemies as Mini Mario, and the cloud was creeping up pretty closely, I turned down that Star Coin where I have to release all those Micro Goombas. I won't take the bait!
