Later, the letters acquired artistic forms thanks to many renowned writers. Origin of Arabic Calligraphy and Its Evolution Through the Ages: *The Pre-Islamic Era:* Writing at the time used an alphabet that was employed in various parts of the Arabian Peninsula. This writing, of Yemeni origin, is considered the source of Arabic writing in the Musnad script. *The Islamic Era:* Islam granted great importance to Arabic calligraphy, especially after the revelation of the Quran. This created a necessity for writing it, marking the beginning of artistic styles in Arabic writing. *The Umayyad Era:* During this period, Arabic calligraphy underwent significant evolution. It was also during this time that the profession of calligrapher emerged, tasked with decorating palaces and mosques. *The Abbasid Era:* In this era, Arabs were in contact with the art, culture, and philosophy of other peoples. The need to translate texts into Arabic contributed to diversifying writing styles. The Abbasid era is considered the golden age of Arabic calligraphy, where this art reached its peak. *The Andalusian Era:* During this period, the Arabic language was the language of culture and knowledge production. Manuscript writing was prevalent in books, panels, and constructions. The Andalusian Kufic style was used in mosques, churches, and temples. *The Fatimid Era:* The Fatimids played a crucial role in developing Arabic calligraphy in Egypt. It was used to decorate numerous locations, such as mosques, facades, castles of kings, and caliphs. This style is known as Fatimid or Kufic calligraphy. *The Ottoman Era:* The Ottomans introduced specific styles of Arabic calligraphy for the Quran. It was during this time that Diwani calligraphy emerged. *The Persian Era:* The Arabs spread the art of calligraphy in Persia through the teaching of the Quran and religion. The Persians contributed to making Arabic the official language. They also created the Ta'liq style, a blend of the Naskh and Ta'liq styles, often used in literary and poetic works. Types of Arabic Calligraphy: 1. *Kufic Style:* One of the oldest styles of Arabic calligraphy, it was used to transcribe the Quran for five centuries. 2. *Ruq‘ah Style:* Used in daily writings, this simple style derives its name from "ruq‘ah," meaning "piece of cloth," as it was often written on small pieces of fabric or paper. 3. *Naskh Style:* Initially used for transcribing the Quran, it became a typographical style. This style is appreciated for its readability, elegance, and balance between its letters. 4. *Persian Style (Nastaliq):* Emerging in Persia in the 7th century Hijri, this script is clear, elegant, and non-complex. 5. *Ijaza Style (Riyhani):* Also known as the signature style, it was used to sign certificates and official documents. 6. *Diwani Style:* Invented by the Ottomans, this decorative style was codified by the calligrapher Ibrahim Munif. It was officially used after the conquest of Constantinople by Sultan Mehmet II. 7. *Tughra Style:* This type of calligraphy adorned Islamic coins and royal decrees. 8. *Maghrebi Style:* This style appeared in Andalusia and the Maghreb.
