Wuthering Heights - published in 1847 by Emily Brontë - is one of the most intense, strange, and unforgettable novels in the English language. It is a story about obsession, class, cruelty, and what happens when love becomes indistinguishable from destruction. Part 1 opens with Lockwood - our narrator - arriving at Wuthering Heights and meeting the master of the house: the cold, forbidding Heathcliff. A snowstorm strands him overnight. He has a dream that will haunt him. Then his housekeeper Nelly Dean begins to tell him the real story, from the very beginning - the night Mr Earnshaw brought a starving, nameless child home from the streets of Liverpool. Chapters 1 to 7 establish the world of the novel: the two houses, the two families, and the two children whose bond will damage everyone around them.
