The Good I got into these cars because I love the way they make you feel when you’re driving one - the feeling of freedom and raw connection to the driving experience. You feel free, youthful, rebellious – a totally different driving experience than your new car. It’s novel not to mention fun because these cars are powerful and fast. Driving them reduces anxiety, it is therapeutic and cathartic. They’re good for your sanity. Plus, they remind you of a time that’s close to your heart like being around your father’s car or brings you back to your high school days and all those memories. They’re also really cool! It’s hard not to feel cool when you’re driving a cool car. And unique – you get loads of attention when you’re driving them. The thumbs ups, honking, stares and pictures. Plus - you have a great community of car lovers out there – so much camaraderie, it’s easy to make friends with this shared passion. Having something to build, upgrade and tinker on – can be very rewarding. You can do it alone, with friends or deepen your relationship by spending time doing it with your kids. And these cars can be affordable to own if you’re satisfied with the condition – most are likely already bought and paid for. They’re inexpensive to register. And did you know that despite common perceptions, owning and driving a classic car is not leaving a giant carbon footprint? Most of that footprint was laid down when the car was made. Keeping a classic on the road is actually a net positive: owners are often meticulous in caring for their classics and most are improved and upgraded. The Bad One of the biggest issues I have with classic cars right now is that they are so expensive to buy. The classic car market continues to change in different ways – but demand is high and that means prices are high. Prices are high because, among other reasons, the cost to upgrade is high. Parts are expensive, labor is expensive, so buying one in today’s market is quite a commitment! Because they are expensive, you don’t want your classic car sitting outside exposed to the elements. So your car needs to be stored inside – the $25K car in garage, and the much more expensive new car in the driveway. Plus, you can’t park anywhere because you’re afraid to get door dinged! And most neighbors don’t appreciate your loud car when you’re starting it up or coming/going. And maybe you don’t want to drive your classic car on especially hot, cold, or rainy days since they’re not as comfortable as your new car. These cars are not very fuel efficient – certainly not as efficient as your new car. You might find that you get the evil eye from someone in a Prius that thinks you’re polluting the environment. You also may find that everybody wants to race you. Classic cars are fast – but even the most upgraded ones are not that fast – a new Volvo is faster than most muscle cars – many just feel “fast”. The Ugly These cars are just not safe. I was almost killed in one 6 years ago. There are so many ways this can happen when you’re operating a piece of equipment that is 50-70 years old. And no matter how much you’ve upgraded or kept totally original, these classic cars are not nearly as reliable as a new car – you might break down at any given point for a variety of reasons. Unless you get a really good deal when you buy it, these cars are definitely not an investment that’s going to greatly increase relative to what you put into them. But, I guess at the end of the day, for me at least, the good outweighs the bad and even the ugly – because the emotional high I get from the rawness of the driving experience and the connection to this community is exactly what keeps me in the game!
