Viking Gods and the Making of the World | 2h Norse Mythology Music Story (Part 1)

PART 1 OF THE NORSE SAGA. PART 2 IS COMING. Before the gods, before the worlds, there was only Ginnungagap, the yawning void. To the north lay Niflheim and its rivers of poisoned ice. To the south lay Muspelheim and its sparks. Where rime met fire the ice began to drip, and out of the dripping came Ymir, first of all beings, and Audhumla, the cow whose milk fed him. Audhumla licked the salt from the ice and uncovered Buri. Buri fathered Borr, Borr fathered Odin, Vili and Ve, and the three brothers rose against Ymir and slew him. From his flesh they made the earth, from his blood the seas, from his bones the mountains, from his skull the sky, from his brains the clouds. On a shore they found two pieces of driftwood, ash and elm, and gave them breath, thought and warmth. From Ask and Embla came all who walk beneath that sky. Through the worlds rose Yggdrasil, the ash that binds them. Three roots, three wells: Urdarbrunnr where the Norns carve fate, Mimisbrunnr where wisdom is guarded and paid for in blood, Hvergelmir where Nidhogg gnaws. The hart Eikthyrnir feeds among the branches and from his antlers the rivers of the worlds pour out. Odin gave his eye for one drink from Mimir's well, then hung nine nights on the windswept tree, pierced by his own spear, given himself to himself, until the runes cried out and he took them up. He walks the worlds under a thousand names, and Thought and Memory return to him with all the world has spoken. From there the saga runs through the first war ever fought, Aesir against Vanir, and the oath that brought Freyr and Freyja into Asgard. Through the wall raised by a builder who asked too high a price. Through Sleipnir, through Sif's shorn gold, through the forges where the sons of Ivaldi worked. Part 1 ends where every hall wants it to end, with a short handled hammer laid into the hand of Thor. Part 2 takes the saga onward from there. Twenty five songs.
