"Beware. A friend of the people." - This is the message of a rebellious lawyer to the young Count Dürande, so one can't necessarily accuse the revolutionaries of 1789 of playing foul. But Dürande, of course, doesn't listen, instead blindly running into ruin, which SOMMER'S WORLD LITERATURE summarizes in just over nine minutes. The young Gabriele Dubois lives with her brother Renald, Count Dürande's huntsman, very close to the castle and has an unknown lover. Renald attempts to kill the secret admirer with a shotgun and thus learns that it is probably the young Count Dürande who is stalking his sister. Gabriele is then forced into a convent, but disappears from it – just as the young count is leaving for Paris. Renald rushes after him, confronts him, and even tries to get help from the king, but only succeeds in having him thrown into a mental asylum. Months later, he returns home in ragged clothes and gives Dürande an ultimatum: Either he agrees to marry Gabriele—or. Dürande chooses either, which results in the people storming the castle. During the fight, he is saved by a mysterious doppelganger—none other than Gabriele, who, however, is wounded (again) for him. Dürande is also hit by a bullet, and they die together. Renald learns too late that Dürande was not the seducer, but that Gabriele had followed him on her own. In despair, he sets fire to the castle and seeks suicide in the flames. "The sun has set / And the moon in the deep sea, / It is already darkening over the land; / Good night! I will see you never again."
