Analyst comments as Brexit chaos continues

(19 Mar 2019) The UK government is in "deadlock" after the Speaker of the House of Commons blocked Prime Minister Theresa May from asking MPs to vote on her Brexit deal for a third time unless it had changed substantially. May was forced to pull her vote planned for this week because John Bercow said she could not ask MPs to pass the same deal after they had already rejected it twice. Tony Travers, Visiting Professor in the Department of Government and Director of the London School of Economics described the situation on Tuesday as "pretty near a constitutional crisis." "The truth is that there is deadlock in Parliament and now with the decision of the Speaker of the House of Commons, the chair, effectively, of the House of Commons, yesterday to say that the May government couldn't bring its proposals back again in their current form for a vote," said Travers. Commuters walked by as anti-Brexit campaigners stood outside Parliament, and anti-Brexit placards adorned the railings. Commuter Reynold Greenlaw said, "I think Bercow was applying the rules and I think he has got a case," but added "I think he may have been a little bit mischievous."
