Tarani Deva Neeve - Raga Tarani - Dr. M Balamuralikrishna teaches to D V Mohana Krishna

☀️ On this bright and beautiful morning of “Ratha Sapthami,” we present you a very rare recording of Dr. M Balamuralikrishna (BMK) teaching his composition “Tarañi Deva” in adoration of Sun God, in the rāga Tarañi. The disciple learning the composition is Sri. D V Mohana Krishna. ✳️ Many compositions have come extempore to BMK during his visit to temples, which can be called as kshétra-darshana kritis. There are several well-known compositions of BMK that fall into this genre. For example, some kritis on Lord Shiva such as, “Brihadhīshwara Mahādéva” in Kānada [the composition came extempore to BMK in the Brihadhīshwara temple of Tanjavur, Tamil Nadu], “Bhajāmi sadā girijāpatim” in Ābhogi [sung extempore in praise of Sri Kanthéshwara, the presiding deity of Nanjangūdu, Karnataka] and “Srī Rāja Rājéshwarā” in the rāga Shivaranjani which was also sung extempore during his visit to a Shiva temple at Vémulawāda in Telangana. ✳️ Tarañi Déva in the rāga Tarañi came extempore to BMK during his visit to Arasavalli (corrupted version of Harshavalli) Sun temple, located in the coastal town of Srikakulam (the birth place of BMK’s guru – Gayaka Sarvabhauma Sri. Parupalli Ramakrishnayya Pantulu) in the north coastal Andhra Pradesh. ✳️ This recording is a rare testimony of the maestro narrating the origin of the creation of rāga Tarañi, and the composition being taught to Sri. D V Mohana Krishna. ✳️ In this recording, BMK says (in Telugu): how an intention manifested as an invitation to visit the temple of Arasavalli; which then led him to an inspiration that moved him to instantly create a rāga, the details of which was not known to him at the time of its creation. ✳️ Rāga Tarañi is derived from “Sénāvati [Mela:07]” and has only 4 notes. The scale is – s g2 p d1 S and S d1 p g2 s. ✳️ Here is a transliteration and a brief import of the composition. The composition is set to Mishra chāpu tālam. taraNi dEva neevE bhava-taraNi dATagA nAva ||p|| maruvalEmu arasavalli, varamula-gaNiki vAkili ||a.p|| itara daivamula unikiki, nee darshanam…. nidarshanam ||1|| taramA? kshaNamaina yI dharaNipai manugada, nee- karuNalEka vashamA? yI kanula-kAnti veekshimpaga ||2|| sapta-svaramulu nee hayamulu sadA gamaka-gamanamulu mAku sarvArOgya-pradamulu nee shata-sahasra-kOTi kiraNamulu ||3|| hlAdamou muraLeegAnamu, sAdarambugaA samarpintunu AdaramutO Alakinchi, sEda-teerchukOvayya ||4|| 🌄 “O Sun, the resplendent One, you alone are the boat to cross-over the ocean of worldliness. It is impossible to forget Arasavalli; and you the gateway to the goldmine of blessings (the One who is shining our mind and intellect). 🌄 For the presence of other (forms of) Gods invisible to the mortal beings, the sight of You is the proof. 🌄 Can life exist at all here on the earth? Without Your kindness can these eyes (of mine) behold the objects without Your light shining within and without? 🌄 While Your seven horses (groomed and controlled) become the seven notes that make music, Your resplendent countless warm rays offer nourishment and health to all beings. 🌄 The delightful Muraligānam, with all my honour I offer unto You. Kindly accept this offering and do repose in the tranquillity of the music.” 🌿A point to be observed in this composition is the effective use of punning words: taraNi dEva-taraNi dATa and nee darshaNam-nidarshaNam. 💐Acknowledgements: 1. Sri. D V Mohana Krishna (DVM) for sharing this recording from his private collection, in the spirit of music for posterity. These recordings of the interactive sessions done by a student had for their primary objective the teachings and not audio quality. A diligent effort has been made to restore them. 2. Sri. T K Ramkumar for his support in bringing out this album.
