The Reason Why Portugal Decriminalizes Assisted Suicide | EWTN News Nightly

Portugal's president has signed a measure to decriminalize assisted suicide. President Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa signed the measure after lawmakers overrode all 4 of his attempts to veto it. After the 4th attempt, the law says the bill must be put into action. Portugal is the 6th country to allow assisted suicide. Pope Francis recently spoke out against the measure in the majority Catholic country. Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, Alex Schadenberg, joins to share what is happening and why there is a huge push for assisted suicide in the country where 80% of the population is Catholic. Euthanasia is now legal is 6 European countries including the Netherlands, where last month lawmakers considered a measure to allow assisted suicide for children between the ages of 1 to 12. Schadenberg tells us what the latest is on that and whether he knows where it ends. Turning now to Canada, a new poll says more than one quarter of the population says assisted suicide should be legal for both homelessness and poverty. Schadenberg gives us his take on this and what this signals. In the US, earlier this month, Vermont became the first state to become a so-called suicide tourism state allowing people from anywhere in the US to go there and end their lives. Schadenberg discusses what he thinks can be done to end the culture of death.
