Heavy rains send salmon swimming across flooded Washington highway - Daily News    / @share-toolfree2593   Heavy,rains,send,salmon,swimming,flooded,Washington,highway Heavy rains in Washington state have resulted in salmon bizarrely swimming across the road.The strange occurrence was captured by several drivers as they approached a flooded road near the Skokomish River in Mason County on Sunday.Drivers spotted multiple salmon darting across a small stretch of the road on US Highway 101 that was covered in just a few inches of water. . Footage shot by Terri Sue showed some of the fish stranded in shallow parts as they desperately tried to swim across.  A fish hatchery specialist, Alexis Leonard, was among those to also witness the bizarre incident. She told CNN that salmon will often making their way to nearby creeks from the Skokomish River so can reproduce.  Share this article Share But the creeks regularly flood when it rains heavily and it can send the salmon everywhere.'If they're lucky, it'll meet up with the creek on the other side of the road, if they're not they're stranded,' Leonard said. The area has just been lashed with days of heavy rain.According to the National Weather Service, much of the flooding has since receded and only scattered showers are forecast moving forward.
