Dark energy, on the other hand, is a hypothetical form of energy that is thought to permeate all of space and drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. It is believed to make up about 68% of the total mass-energy in the universe. Dark energy is thought to have a negative pressure, which causes it to act like a repulsive force that counteracts gravity and causes the expansion of the universe to accelerate. The existence of dark energy was first inferred from observations of distant supernovae in the late 1990s, and its properties are still being studied by scientists today.
