The judge’s decision, issued on Friday, stated, “Taking Payne up to his room in the state he was in was to put his life at risk. It was obvious that he was vulnerable.” Payne’s autopsy revealed that large quantities of cocaine and alcohol were found in his system at the time of his death. According to the prosecutor’s office, Payne allegedly bought cocaine from the hotel employee and waiter on at least four occasions over a three-day period. Surveillance footage from the hotel lobby shows Payne unconscious just minutes before his death, being carried to his room by three people, including the hotel receptionist and manager. The judge noted that Payne’s altered state of consciousness should have led hotel staff to place him in a safe location and wait for medical help, instead of leaving him alone in a room with a balcony. Evidence indicated that Payne attempted to leave through the balcony and fell due to his impaired state. Payne’s manager, identified only by the initials “RLN,” left the hotel less than an hour before the fall. The judge criticized the manager for entrusting hotel staff with Payne’s wellbeing and has since barred him from leaving Argentina. Liam Payne rose to fame as part of One Direction, a boy band formed on The X Factor in 2010. The group enjoyed global success before splitting in 2016.
