Hollow Knight! My First Playthrough - 112% Completion (PC) (Part 3 of 7)

It's a little odd how we don't really have any indie games on this channel, even though the focus is retro. This was BY FAR the most requested indie title for me to try first, and I'm glad I did. Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania that takes place in a dark underground bug kingdom where you explore with a mysterious insect warrior. The first thing you'll notice is how almost everything is hand drawn, which is amazing for it's scale, then combine that with a mellow ambient orchestral theme, and you'll be instantly immersed. This game doesn't hold your hand in many ways and it's presented very old school, you'll get lost quickly and have to leave markers on the map to keep track of points of interest. The movement and combat flows like an action platformer with a neat "pogo" mechanic that allows you to bounce off enemies and objects with your weapon. You also acquire some powerful spells and abilities that can be amplified by a charm system, this allows you to customize your playstyle and experiment a lot. The difficulty is another standout point, your reflexes will be tested and it's punishing if you die with a souls like mechanic where you become weaker, with less soul meter and must travel back to the same point you died, if you fail you'll lose all the currency you've collected and didn't spend. There's many memorable boss fights, endless enemies, charming characters, hidden secrets, insane platforming and fortunately I played this late, so I had a ton of extra content from the DLC to complete as well. If you're a fan of deep lore this game has a ton of it, with it's story and world not spelled out to you, and you'll have to tie all the pieces together. There was so much hype leading into this game so I was cautious but once I started getting into it I got addicted and I knew I had to collect everything it had to offer so we did a full 112% completion run. You can definitely add me to the list of people who highly request this game and why it became an instant classic, showcasing the strength of indie titles.
